TARPONVILLE – COSTA RICA – APRIL 13-20, 2019 (
SEVEN TWO SPOTS REMAINING) & AUGUST 26-SEPTEMBER 2nd (Hosted by Kate Watson)
Located in southern Costa Rica near the small town of Manzanillo, Tarponville Fishing Lodge is a unique Tarpon fishery for anglers of all skill levels. After having experienced this fishery first hand it is true that Costa Rica’s Tarpon are among the biggest in the world. These fish average from 70-110, while fish pushing up and over 150 pounds are not uncommon.
Tarponville is unique in the sense that those who have never tried their hand at saltwater fly fishing will still have an excellent chance at a true trophy Tarpon. Experienced anglers can selectively target rolling and cruising fish, for those not comfortable with casting a 12 weight rod your guide can set up a blind drift at one of the river mouths that Tarponville boats frequent.
Fishing is done 12 weights and intermediate lines from traditional boats called Pangas that hover around 26 feet in length. Unlike many Tarpon fisheries, Tarponville offers the opportunity for both anglers in the boat to fish simultaneously. In the moment that a 100+ pound Tarpon grabs your fly, time seemingly stands still. After a solid strip set, these fish are often in the air before making multiple violent runs into your backing.
By-catch when Tarpon fishing consists of great numbers of powerful Jack Crevalle that will leave you with sore arms by the end of the day. Aside from their main Tarpon fishery, Tarponville also offers a completely untouched Permit and Bonefish flat, a lagoon fishery for juvenile Tarpon and Snook, and great opportunities to catch Triggerfish only a hundred feet from the lodge itself.
Though it is a rustic lodge situated in the heart of the jungle, Tarponville’s accommodations are clean and comfortable. Each room at the lodge has two beds, a private bathroom as well as filtered water dispensers. On the main floor you will find the kitchen and an open air dining area where you will enjoy 3 hot meals a day consisting of local Carribean cuisine.
Every day begins with breakfast at 6:30am, with your guide waiting for you by 7 o’clock. Beverages are packed in a cooler with plenty of ice for the morning and evening fishing sessions. You will fish until 11am before returning to the lodge for lunch and a “siesta”. You will return to the water at 2pm and fish hard until dark, then returning to the lodge for “happy hour” and an excellent dinner consisting of local cuisine.
Upon arriving at the San Jose International Airport.(SJO), a short 30 min flight via Sanza air will provide means of getting to Limon. Once landed a scenic one hour drive down the coast of Costa Rica will take guests just a few hundreds meters from the lodge and a refreshing beverage upon arrival.
