REVIEW – Ross Evolution R Salt 11/12 Reel

I will start this unbiased review by saying that after a week of testing it on some of the biggest and baddest fish that swim in the Caribbean, this reel is a beast.  It is an absolute machine that I would willingly put to the test against any size or species of fish found anywhere in the world.

One of the first things I noticed about this reel when it was first unboxed was the dual counterbalance points (for the non-anglers, this means two little metal things instead of one!) that are designed to reduce vibration when fish are taking long runs at high speed. read more

TARPONVILLE – Daily Blog Overview

posted in: Travel | 0

The first leg of the journey to Tarponville Fishing Lodge in southern Costa Rica begins tomorrow, and blog posts will be slightly different than usual in the coming week.  Each day I will be doing a recap of the day’s fishing, along with a small handful of photos.  We will be chasing some seriously big Tarpon as well as a couple other species including Jacks and Triggerfish.

Preparing For a Destination Fly Fishing Trip

Packing for a destination trip can be a daunting task.  The mere thought of forgetting something as important as a passport or essential travel documents is enough to make your heart jump into your throat.  Aside from these important items, there are a few ways to make sure you are prepared for your next destination fly fishing trip.

Extra Everything:  It is so easy to assume that you won’t drop a pair of sunglasses off the side of the boat, break a rod tip landing a fish or get all of your shirts filthy before the end of your trip.  A few things I double up on: read more

VIDEO: 9 Degrees South – The Land of Giants by Fly Fishing Nation

Let’s talk bucket list fly fishing destinations for a second.  Close your eyes, and imagine you could go anywhere in the world.  One that is continually at the forefront of my brain is Cosmoledo Atoll.  The size and power of these GT’s is something I must experience at some point in my life.  Until then, here’s one of the best fly fishing films showcasing the amazing fishery the Seychelles have to offer!

Fly Fishing Icon Lefty Kreh Passes Away at 93

If there were such thing as a celebrity in the fly fishing industry, Bernard “Lefty” Kreh would be it.  It is incredibly sad to imagine even typing the news that Lefty is passed on.  Lefty was undoubtedly one of the great pioneers of the sport of fly fishing, and one of the best authors the industry has ever seen.

I owe a lot to Lefty and his books, I received a copy of “Fly Fishing in Saltwater” for my 16th birthday.  I didn’t know what a Tarpon was at the time, I didn’t know what a bonefish was, I barely knew how to tie a blood knot but the passion that Lefty portrayed in his writing peaked my interest in the sport of saltwater fly fishing. read more

Fly Tying: How to Tie EP Fibre Baitfish Patterns

Tying flies in preparation for a quick jaunt down to Tarponville in a few weeks has reminded me how much I love tying with EP Fibre (or “fiber”, for our friends south of the border!).  EP fibre, whether tied in a brush or loose strands, makes it super easy to create great baitfish patterns that offer great translucency.

EP minnows and baitfish can be tied in a variety of sizes and colours for all sorts of species from trout and salmon to GT’s and Tarpon.  The fly in this step-by-step is tied for Tarpon, but can easily be scaled down and fished for rainbows and bull trout. read more

VIDEO: YETI Presents -120 Days

This video is more than just a fly fishing video to me, it showcases the pure obsession behind it, along with some real-time guide frustration.  I have not listened to someone talk more passionately about their craft than David Mangum does in this video.  I have watched it a million times and still never gets old to me, so if you are out of things to do on this Friday night sit back and enjoy this!
