Stillwater fly fishing can be a finicky, particular game at times. The fish are ever-present, but there are days when getting them to eat seems like the most difficult task in the world. Having a solid fleet of fly lines allows you to cover a multitude of scenarios, here are the lines I have chosen for the 2018 guiding season along with a short outline of their different uses. All lines are weight forward, six weight aside from our fastest sinking line.
Scientific Anglers Amplitude MPX
This is my favourite floating fly line on the market. It is versatile, the taper is just aggressive enough and it lays perfectly straight when fishing static presentations. This line is used for chironomid fishing both with and without indicators as well as fishing mayfly nymphs, leeches and scuds in shallow water. The taper also caters to fishing dries and emergers without making too much of a disturbance on the water’s surface.
Scientific Anglers Wavelength Titan Taper
This line is used almost exclusively for turning over indicator rigs and long leaders. Its rear taper is very short, and the head of the line is aggressively designed to cast longer, heavier setups. This taper is also very forgiving and works well for those just learning to cast.
Scientific Anglers Sonar Stillwater Hover
This is the slowest sinking line that I own. It falls at a rate of 1 inch per second and is a machine in shallow, clear water. Crawling mayfly nymphs, fishing damsels close to the reeds, stripping leeches across marl flats, this is an excellent line for fishing ten feet of water or less. A big advantage that intermediate lines have over floating lines is that they do not create a wake or disturbance in the surface film.
Scientific Anglers Stillwater Seamless Density S3/S5
This line is a full sinking line that is designed with a faster sink rate up front than the running line. This creates a uniform sink rate without hinging. This line is most often used for fishing water that is 10 to 15 feet deep with a wide variety of flies including leeches, dragonfly nymphs, damsels and blobs.
