Stoney Lake Youth Fly Camp 2018 – Day 1 Recap

It has been a hot minute since a new blog post has been written!  Apologies, work has a way of consuming a hell of a lot of time through the busy months.  Couple that with not having access to wi-fi for the last 5 weeks and it makes things a bit tricky.  Luckily, we are at Stoney Lake Lodge this weekend for the 2018 Youth Fly Camp and things are off to a stellar start!

This event is for youth under 16 years old, and it is incredible to see such young people interested in the sport of fly fishing.  This morning I was lucky enough to take two young anglers aged 11 and 12 on the water, after a few missed opportunities I got to watch their eyes light up as one nice rainbow after another hit the net. read more

Photo Essay: Fishing BC Hosted Trip

It is no secret that spring stillwater fishing in the interior of BC is a great time.  During this event led by Brian Chan and Phil Rowley, two days were spent at Corbett Lake Lodge followed by another two at Stoney Lake Lodge.  The food, the people, the experience, it was an event I am very grateful to have been able to work alongside some of my favourite people in the fly fishing industry.

Here are a few photos that brought back great memories from last week’s adventures:

TARPONVILLE – 2018 Trip Review

From flying through an electrical storm to finding ourselves in the town of Alajuela, Costa Rica during the country’s most significant holiday, our travels to Tarponville fishing lodge were interesting to say the least.  After a short flight from San Jose to Puerto Limon and a one hour shuttle, we were graciously met by Tarponville owner Mark Martin and his fishing manager Tim at the entrance to the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. Due to it’s location a few hundred yards inside the boundary, the lodge is not accessible by motorized vehicle. After a short walk we found ourselves at the southern most fishing lodge in Costa Rica. Tarponville is a rustic yet comfortable and well-kept lodge located in the heart of the Costa Rican jungle. read more

Preparing For a Destination Fly Fishing Trip

Packing for a destination trip can be a daunting task.  The mere thought of forgetting something as important as a passport or essential travel documents is enough to make your heart jump into your throat.  Aside from these important items, there are a few ways to make sure you are prepared for your next destination fly fishing trip.

Extra Everything:  It is so easy to assume that you won’t drop a pair of sunglasses off the side of the boat, break a rod tip landing a fish or get all of your shirts filthy before the end of your trip.  A few things I double up on: read more

Fly Tying: How to Tie EP Fibre Baitfish Patterns

Tying flies in preparation for a quick jaunt down to Tarponville in a few weeks has reminded me how much I love tying with EP Fibre (or “fiber”, for our friends south of the border!).  EP fibre, whether tied in a brush or loose strands, makes it super easy to create great baitfish patterns that offer great translucency.

EP minnows and baitfish can be tied in a variety of sizes and colours for all sorts of species from trout and salmon to GT’s and Tarpon.  The fly in this step-by-step is tied for Tarpon, but can easily be scaled down and fished for rainbows and bull trout. read more
